ImageHistorical fiction is my vice. I am a busy mom of boys who truly does not have much time for anything extra. However, when i find a good read, I make the time to enjoy it.  The Girl in the Gatehouse was a fantastic book and was totally worth my time.  It takes place in the Jane Austen era, a personal favorite of mine. Once I find an author whose style I enjoy, I read all of their books. It appears I am now working my way through Julie Klassen’s titles!

The heroine of the Girl in the Gatehouse is Mariah Aubrey who is like so many girls in that she makes a mistake she can’t outrun. Her father is less than forgiving and sends her away with little money and her childhood governess. Mariah struggles to overcome her past while dealing with her present. On a stormy night, Mariah meets Captain Matthew Bryant who is headed down a very different path. Author Julie Klassen does a beautiful job of bringing these two characters together in such a way that insures I will be reading this lovely novel again.

We are excited to finally have the plants in the ground. As Spring wobbles back and forth from cold to hot, short sleeves back to sweaters, I am almost certain the last frost has passed. One can hope. Bravely, my husband transferred all of our potted veggies into our raised beds. The onions are doing great, as are the radishes, but the peas never popped. I always love when the tomato plants start producing, but we are a long away from those happy days. It is funny to me the anticipation I feel when the plants disappear from my window ledge and fill our sad, empty raised beds. And I feel the same anticipation at the end of summer, when I get to whack it all down with my best effort. Here is to another summer of yummy veggies.

This August we will be celebrating our ten year wedding anniversary. In these past ten years, we have had every sort of kitchen table you could possibly imagine. Circle, Oval, rectangle, wood, glass, gifted, purchased, and everything in between. We change dinning tables like most people change underwear. So finally, after years of table debacles, we began our search for the table. The table you see in magazines but don’t see in furniture stores. The one table that you will have for years and that your children will fight over when you die. My husband, Jeremy, stumbled upon a carpenter in Virginia who makes farm tables. His company is called Concepts Created, in Staunton. Check them out at conceptscreated.com. Our table has been home for a few months now, but I cannot stop marveling at it. It is gorgeous. The tabletop is three inches thick and make from reclaimed barn wood from a New Hampshire barn that was built before the civil war. Can a table have a more interesting history than that?? We shall never want for dinner conversation when company is over!
