The Bridge TenderThe Bridge Tender by Marybeth Whalen is an unexpected journey through grief and recovery. This is not the typical romance novel where you meet the widow a year after her husband’s death and she quickly meets and falls in love with a man she hardly knows. In fact, this book is more about a woman who faces a devastating loss and slowly moves through recovery. It is heavy and emotional and I would not take it on vacation.

In this book, we are introduced to Emily Shaw who has married an amazing man named Ryan. After being married a few years shy of a decade, Emily loses Ryan to illness. He left her enough money to buy their dream home on the island of their honeymoon destination, Sunset Beach. It is there she meets new people she grows to love, including a man who understands loss.

Marybeth Whalen has a way with words. This story is unlike anything I have ever read. It is so different from many books that address the same issue of loss and loving again. The grief Emily Shaw feels in this book is tangible. It felt real and I actually cried a few real tears! I loved this book for that reason.  While it does end happily, the hope and relief come slowly. There is no instant gratification here. I would still give this book four stars, but I do not recommend this book for a fun and flirty vacation read. Seriously, you will need tissues…and a muffin.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from its publisher and BookLookBloggers in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

Speaking of a muffin, Marybeth Whalen also included recipes from the story in the back of the book! Here are the “Miracle Chocolate Chip Muffins.” After reading The Bridge Tender, I absolutely needed a muffin!

You really only need basic pantry ingredients.

Muffin Ingredients2 Large Eggs

2 Cups Sour Cream

1 Cup Milk

3 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour

4 Tbsp Sugar

2 tsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Salt

2 Cups Chocolate Chips

In a bowl, beat the 2 eggs. Next, stir in sour cream and milk. Mix dry ingredients together and then combine with the wet ingredients. Stir until moistened. Fold in Chocolate Chips. Fill greased muffin tin cups 3/4 full. Marybeth Whalen’s instructions say to bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes.

Muffin BatterI did so the first time and burnt mine. I think my oven is hotter! The second batch I baked at 375 for 20 minutes and they were perfect.

MuffinsBecause I am an emotional eater, I strongly suggest baking these before you read. If you are like me, you will need them!

One Pan Chocolate Cake!

Chocolate cake, King Arthur Flour, One Pan Chocolate Cake, Simple Chocolate Frosting

This is an amazingly simply and delicious chocolate cake. I had almost all of the ingredients in my cabinet. The best part, you can make it in the pan you will bake it in. Unbelievably, it calls for no eggs or butter! I got this recipe from King Arthur Flour’s website, kingarthurflour.com.

King arthur

King Arthur Flour’s original cake-pan cake

You will need:

1 1/2 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour

1 cup Sugar

1/4 cup Cocoa

1/2 tsp Salt

1 tsp baking Soda

1 tsp vanilla

1 tbsp vinegar

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 cup cold water or coffee (what I used), or milk

Preheat oven to 350.

Measure all dry ingredients into an 8′ or 9″ baking pan. Be sure the pan is at least 2 inches deep. Blend the dry ingredients together thoroughly with a fork or whisk. Scoop out three holes or indentations.

Pour vanilla into one hole, vinegar into the second, and oil into third.

Take the cup of cold liquid and pour directly over everything in the pan. Stir everything together until well blended.

Bake for 30-35 minutes. Serve right from the pan warm from the oven. OR, ice the cake with this simple frosting. Melt 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips with 1/2 cup of half and half until the chips melt. Stir until smooth and then pour and spread over cake. I melted mine in sauce pan on the stove top.

Chocolate cakeWould you believe my husband hacked into this cake while I was letting it cool? I never got a picture of the entire finished product. It was so good and so easy I wanted to share anyway. This cake is very dense and so different from anything I have ever made. It would be great for a quick dessert that is amazing with ice cream. Enjoy!

Book Review: The Heart’s Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher

Robin Lee Hatcher, The Heart's Pursuit

The Heart's PursuitI love to read Historical Fiction like this new title from Robin Lee Hatcher. When I select books to review, I always choose according to what I already know I love. I know myself well, because I easily read The Heart’s Pursuit in a day. It is an enjoyable read and is very entertaining.

Robin Lee Hatcher tells the story of Silver Matlock who is left waiting at the altar. Blinded by her desire to marry, she missed the truth before her eyes. The groom not only broke her heart, but also made off with her family’s money. In desperation, she seeks out the help of a bounty hunter, Jared Newman. Jared works as a bounty hunter, but his true mission is to find and kill the man who murdered his family. The pair set off across the west on their own agendas, but find something unexpected in each other.

What I loved about this title is the strength Hatcher has written in Silver. She is a lady, but she is also strong and holds her own. Silver never backs down and remains determined. What I disliked about this book is the silence between the characters. Jared barely speaks on their trail ride and I wanted more from him. There is a stated reason for his silence, but I love to watch a romance grow.

Overall, this book is a four star Romance. If you love historical fiction, with action, adventure, love and a handsome hero this book is for you! I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

Love Skip JumpBuy this book. Read this book. Then, give this book to someone else and plead with them to read it.  This book is for you and this book was absolutely written for me. If I could give it ten stars, I would in a heart beat.

Shelene Bryan is the founder and executive director of Skip1.org.  Love Skip Jump is the story of how Skip1.org was founded. More than that, it is the story of how one woman’s yes radically altered the lives of so many. Shelene’s actions changed her own life and caused an unknown amount of ripples throughout the world.

I could not put this book down. I feel like my words may fail to convince anyone they should read this book. I wish I could adequately express how much I enjoyed reading Shelene Bryan’s story. Never before have I read a book that so exemplifies faith in action. I was so moved, so inspired by this true story of God using everyday encounters and divine appointments to accomplish his will.  Finishing this book will leave you wanting to love more, skip a few things, and jump into the adventure God has for you.

Here is a PSA from Skip1.org to give you a small glimpse of what one yes can do!

Backyard Garden, cut flowers, flower garden

seeds 14I love to bring a dear friend flowers. It is such a lovely gesture, but it can also be pricey. Last year I planted Daisies and Zinnias in our raised beds in my back yard. I spent less than $10 on the seed packets and made at least 20 bouquets from the flowers those seeds produced! It was so fun to give them away on birthdays or deliver a mason jar full of flowers to a friend having a bad week. This year I added a few more varieties to spice up my bouquets like Cosmos and Mexican Sunflowers. I planted all my seeds yesterday and I expect to have flowers to cut by July. My Zinnias from last year were so beautiful and beyond weeding and watering, are low maintenance. My backyard garden is truly one of my favorite things.

Lorna Seilstad, Revell Publishing, When Love Calls, While Love Stirs

While love stirsWhile Love Stirs written by Lorna Seilstad is Book #2 in her Gregory Sisters Series. It is a delightful read that I would give a two cups of coffee rating! That is, I will need to two cups of coffee today because I stayed up way past bed time to finish it! Lorna Seilstad does a great job of writing a series involving the same characters and allowing each book to stand alone. Seilstad does allude to details from Book #1, When Love Calls, but in no way did I feel like I was lost not having read it.

In this new title, Charlotte Gregory is looking to secure a position after graduating from Fannie Farmer’s School of Cookery. She is an excellent cook, but in 1910 women were not welcome in professional chefs kitchens. Charlotte is passionate and intelligent which always makes for a likeable heroine. In the midst of trying to pave the way for herself, she meets not one but two possible suitors. Dr. Brooks, the attractive but controlling physician, and Lewis the young talented vocalist.

While Love Stirs is the second book of Seilstad’s I have had the pleasure of reading. I also enjoyed Making Waves which released several years ago. If you enjoy lighthearted romantic historical fiction, this book is for you. It would definitely make for a great vacation read as it does not have an overcomplicated plot.

Here to Stay, Melissa Tagg

Here to StayIf you love a good Hallmark movie, this book is absolutely for you! This is a sweet story filled with likeable characters in a town you will wish you lived in or at least could visit. While Melissa Tagg continues the story line from her debut Novel, Made to Last, this book stands alone.

In Here to Stay, Blake Hunziker is returning to Whisper Shore after years of travel and adventure. He is finally ready to face his family and hometown who remember him as Blaze for a good reason. Not long after returning, he requires the assistance of Autumn Kingsley who owns and runs her family’s inn. Autumn agrees to help Blake, and quickly finds herself enjoying their time together. Autumn is desperate to finally leave Whisper Shore and begin her dream job in Paris, but in all of her planning she didn’t account for Blake.

I can totally see Rachel McAdams as Autumn and Ryan Gosling as Blake! This novel is not only a fantastic romantic tale, but it is also filled with humor and interesting dialogue.  Here to Stay would be an excellent beach or poolside read as it is enjoyable and easy to follow. Put Melissa Tag on your list of authors to read!

Radish, radish and cream cheese dip, radish dip, Radish recipes, veggie dip

Radish DipSeriously, this is my favorite way to eat radishes! Three ingredients and a food processor is all you are going to need.

4 ounce Neufchatel cream cheese (the 1/3 less fat kind)

5-6 radishes

2 cloves garlic

Keep in mind this recipe is easily doubled. I make a half batch because I have no self-control.  Clean, cap and quarter radishes and add to food processor. Add two peeled cloves of garlic. Cut cream cheese into cubes and throw into the food processor. Pulse, scrape sides, and pulse again. Serve with your favorite cracker or as veggie dip. Yum!

Patsy Clairmont, Twirl, Women of Faith

TwirlThis book is fabulous. I think I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed it. Author Patsy Clairmont has created an invaluable resource full of wisdom and advice every woman I know could utilize.  I feel like have had tea with a dear friend and she has listened to all my worries and frustrations and given me truth for what ails me.

A good sign that a book is a fast favorite is the need for a highlighter. Even as I read the first few pages of the introduction, I found my self underlining and dog-earing pages to return to! In Twirl, Patsy Clairmont gives the tools needed to jump off the merry-go-round of life. She not only nails down the problem of busyness, but offers so many practical solutions. I have read so many books that tell me I am too busy or missing the big picture. Very few of those books offer advise on how to slow down and relish the day-to-day. My favorite chapter is entitled “Edit.”  Edit is officially my motto for 2014. I will listen more and talk less. I will give advice only when I have been asked for it! I want to be the woman Patsy describes in the introduction, ” There is something about a sane person who has a pulse on her life, one who is setting healthy limits, who is winsome, enviable, and honorable.”

I was given a complimentary copy of Twirl by its publisher and BookLook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.
