Falling Like Snowflakes

I can always judge a book by how many days it takes me to read it. A really wonderful piece of fiction I can devour in just a few short days. Denise Hunter’s new book, Falling Like Snowflakes took only two days to finish because I simply could not put it down.

Falling Like Snowflakes is the first book in Hunter’s Summer Harbor Series. This novel follows the story of Eden Martelli who is on the run in a less the road worthy mini van with her son Micah. She becomes stranded in a small town, Summer Harbor, and is desperate for help. Eden finds it in the Callahan family. While she is desperate for assistance, she is guarded and ready to move on in an instant if necessary. The love of the Callahan family draws her in and the rest….you will have to read. This a love story full of hope and excitement. There are some tense moments, but nothing that will keep you up at night.

What I love the most about Denise Hunter’s books, is that she typically follows a family or people in the same community over the course of a series. Everyone is connected and you get to see old friends in new books. I am excited to read the next book in this series. I also loved Hunter’s Chapel Springs series, specifically Dancing with Butterflies and Married till Monday. You can see all of Denise Hunter’s fabulous books on her website.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book to review in exchange for my honest options. I have not been compensated in any way and all opinions are my own.

Girl Meets Change

As a self-described hater of change, I knew this book by author Kristen Strong would be a wise choice for me.  I am a girl who digs in her heals when change is in the air. I loathe a departure from things familiar. Girl Meets Change is such an encouraging read for anyone who has ever endured change, drastic or small. And because the seasons change….this book is a great read for all of us.

What I love about Girl Meets Change is the way Kristen ties in her own personal stories and accounts from people she has known, as well as truth for the God’s word. This book is not just a personal account full of examples of how she endured and coped with change. It is also a guide to what the Bible has to say to us about life and how we can apply it to our own personal situations.

If I had to pick my favorite quote from this book, it would be, “I can’t wring my hands if I am holding something in them.”  Kristen so gently reminds us that we need to spend some time in the Good Book before ever getting on Facebook. She goes on to say that the distractions of this life are not going away. We have to carve out time for what is most important.

Girl Meets Change is an easy five starts. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. Check out more from Kristen Strong on her blog, Chasing Blue Skies.

Bob Hartman, Book Review, Fiction for Boys, The Big Pig Stampede

The Big Pig Stampede

High and low I have searched for something my two boys could read….that wasn’t full of crude humor, “potty talk,” or dark magic.  So much of what it is out for boys to read is terribly inappropriate. I wouldn’t let them watch it, let alone read it! My boys and I have been reading this book together every night, and they love it. There is plenty of silliness and grossness to captivate them, but there is also Bible story after Bible story embedded in this story of “the goat boy.”

In The Big Pig Stampede, a boy named Gideon who is affectionately nicknamed the goat boy, manages to be a witness to the miracles of Jesus we read about in the New Testament. He is unaware of their significance, but they seem to be greatly impacting his life. Gideon and his friend Bug have so many adventures in this book, from helping lower a sick many through a roof to seeing Jesus feed a multitude. Author Bob Hartman does such a great job of captivating my sons’ attention with his writing. Elementary age boys are a tough audience!  My two have asked questions, or been excited to hear a story they know well retold from a witness perspective.

I would say that this book is likely to please any boy, or girl for that matter, from age 6 to 10. We will be following the series and will be looking forward to the next book in the Goat Boy Chronicles! Thank you Bob Harman for writing something I can let my boys read! I was given a complimentary copy of this book to review in exchange for my honest opinion. I have not been compensated in any way. All opinions are my own.

Book Review, For the Love, Jen Hatmaker

For the Love

I found For the Love to be a delightful surprise, full of grace, laughter, and memorable moments. Jen Hatmaker has written something very different from other similarly themed books that seem to be flooding the book stores. I think the difference is in Hatmaker’s ability to tone down the seriousness and amp up the humor. After all, laughter is the best medicine for whatever ails you.

The best way to describe For the Love is to call it what it is: Jen Hatmaker on her soap box. I mean no insult by saying that, but while grace is a central theme in this book, no constant train of thought connects the chapters.  If she has been longing to say something, she waited to say it this book. There is hardly an area of life she doesn’t speak to. Chapters filled with hilarity will leave you snorting, followed by chapters that might ruffle your feathers a bit. Hatmaker shares from her heart, but includes heavy doses of her sense of humor. I loved it, and I haven’t always been her biggest fan.

Early in the book she speaks to the idea that we have been sold a lie that we can do everything and do it with perfection. Hatmaker urges readers to recognize those things that we just need to let go. I appreciated this advice as a person who finds a yes slipping out of my mouth before I realize it!

This book was a fun read that also adds value. It is not a deep theological study of anything, but will still tug at your heart-strings. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher and BookLookBloggers in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated in any way and all opinions are my own.

Book Review: Hot Mama

Hot Mama

When my friends and I have a night out to grab coffee and chat, or a group busy married mamas get anytime alone to talk, sex and marriage ALWAYS comes up in the conversation. We talk about struggles, exhaustion, and the feeling that we are pulled in 20,000 different directions with hardly anything leftover for our dear husbands. I love this book for being a resource to women who need a little encouragement in regaining their “umph.”

Hot Mama is thirteen chapters in length that you can almost get through in one sitting. Kathy Lipp and Erin Macpherson make you feel like are you sitting with your friends and getting some honest and practical advice to feel like a “Hot Mama” again. They offer online tools, and a free study guide should you feel like you want to discuss this book in a Bible study or small group. (I would caution here that some chapters in this book may lead to oversharing…tread carefully).  They also include a Q&A from “sexperts” that might answer lingering questions you have had, but were afraid to ask. Their experts include an OBGYN, a marriage and family therapist, a marriage counselor, and two pastors.

I would recommend this book to any woman who feels like they are struggling in this area and really would like some honest advice from a trusted source. The good news is, you can purchase this book as an ebook and avoid any embarrassment at the checkout! I was given a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I have not been compensated in any way.
