to wager her heart

Tamera Alexander is by far one of the best story tellers in historical fiction. Her attention to detail, realistic characters, and ability to convey genuine emotion make every novel she pens one that I will read over and over again. To Wager Her Heart is no exception. Like the two books that precede it, To Whisper Her Name and To Win Her Favor, I was captivated from the first chapter. I quickly became invested in the story of Alexandra Jamison and Sylas Rutledge.

Alexandra Jamison is a young woman who has known tragedy and loss. Looking for purpose, Alexandra takes on a teaching position at Fisk University and loses what is left of her family. She meets an undignified Sylas Rutledge who becomes an important friend despite her first impressions. I love the way this story unfolds! I so appreciate the way the relationship between Alexandra and Sylas develops.  I also enjoyed the history Tamera Alexander included regarding Fisk University and the Jubilee Singers. There is a moment in the beginning of the novel where Alexandra mistakes a generous colleague for a maid.  It was in that part of the story, that I began to appreciate how well Tamera Alexander creates flawed characters that we can fall in love with! I was literally embarrassed for the main character…I felt what she felt. This is the mark of a great novel.

If you love historical fiction, To Wager Her Heart is a must read!  I am admittedly a huge Tamera Alexander fan and I am always aware of when she has a new release coming out. I have read every single novel she has written and they are all fantastic. However, I must say, the Belle Meade Plantation Novels have been my favorite. You do not have to read them in sequential order as they easily stand alone. But you should definitely read the entire series! I was given an Advanced Reader’s Copy by the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review. ( I would have purchased this book anyway…it was on my MUST READ list.)

Keith Mathison, Not a Chance, R.C.Sproul

016219R.C. Sproul with Keith Mathison in this newly expanded edition of Not A Chance confront the scientific community in their belief of a self-creating universe. This is a thought-provoking read worth the time it will take you to digest each chapter. It will bolster your confidence in a Creator God if you have the wherewithal to devote yourself to reading Not A Chance in its entirety.

To be honest, I have done little in my life to pursue science. I have a Bachelor of Arts for a very good reason; it meant I only needed three credit hours of science to graduate. In light of that, I knew before this book arrived I would struggle to follow Sproul regardless of his attempt to put his argument in layman’s terms. However, I welcomed the challenge because I believe it is important to defend my faith. For this reason, I encourage anyone and everyone to read this title. Regardless of your personal belief, Not a Chance is a book for those on both sides of the creation argument.

I admit I could not help but hear Morgan Freeman reading this book to me. And now you will too, should you choose to read it! I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

Ann H. Gabhart, Book Review, Brown Sugar Pie, Love Comes Home, Rosey Corner Series

pie9Love Comes Home by Ann H. Gabhart is book three in the Rosey Corner Series. Not only did I truly enjoy this post WWII romance, but I was also delighted by the Brown Sugar Pie Recipe Ann included. The only thing better than a good book, is a reading a good book with a piece of pie! Let’s start with the book!

Love Comes HomeWhile Love Comes Home is third in a series, it definitely stands alone. After reading it, I am anxious to read the books which proceeded it, but they are not necessary to enjoy this book. Ann H. Gabhart did an amazing job capturing the excitement and struggles of soldiers returning home. Gabhart depicted the time period perfectly and made me want to travel to Rosey Corner myself.

In this story, WWII has ended and the Merritt sisters of Rosey Corner are welcoming their sweethearts home at last. My favorite of the sisters, Kate, is reunited with Jay who she had just married when the war began. They work at falling in love all over again and picking up where they left off.  I also felt drawn to Victoria who lost her love to the war. Tori struggles to overcome her grief and to give a new life a chance.

This is exactly the kind of historical fiction I love so much. Love Comes Home is heart-warming and delightful to read.  Ann H. Gabhart tells a wonderful story with faith included in a natural way. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic historical fiction. I cannot wait to read other books by Ann.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

At the end of the book, Ann includes the recipe for the Brown Sugar Pie that her character Jay loved so much. When authors do this, I like to include the recipe with my review. I bake regularly and am no stranger to the kitchen, but my weakness is pie. I am terrible at making pie. This one turned out well and was pretty easy to make.

You will need:

6 tablespoons butter

6 teaspoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed

2 cups milk

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 large egg yolks, beaten (save whites for meringue)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 9″pastry shell, baked

For the Meringue:

3 egg whites, room temperature

1/4  teaspoon cream of tartar

6 tablespoons sugar

First, bake your pie crust. I bought a refrigerated pie crust and it worked perfectly.

piePress it in the pie pan and then stab it with a fork many times. Follow the directions for baking on the box.  It will look like this.

Pie1Next, go ahead and separate your eggs.

pie2Then, beat the yolks. By the time you are ready for the whites they should be at room temperature. Next, melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, remove from heat. Add flour and stir until smooth.

pie5Stir in brown sugar.

pie4Return to heat and stir in milk and salt until well blended. Cook and stir over medium high heat in the saucepan until thick and bubbly. Reduce heat, cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat. Now you are going to add 2 tablespoons of the hot pie filling to the yolks and then add the mixture into the pie filling in the saucepan. Be careful to add it in slowly or you will scramble your eggs! Once it is added, stir constantly. Bring the filling to a gentle boil, cook and stir for 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat and gently stir in the vanilla. Pour the mixture into the pastry shell.

Now make the meringue by beating the egg whites with the cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar and beat until stiff and glossy. Spread evenly over pie filling sealing meringue to pie crust. (this is the part I missed.)

pie7I needed to spread it a little closer to the crust! Pardon the dishes in the sink. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

pie8This pie really is scrumptious. So much so, I had to dump the last third of it to keep myself from polishing it off!!  This pie is a must try. I will make it again to see if I have finally mastered my arch nemeses in the kitchen. Enjoy!

Book Review, Lori Copeland, The Healer's Touch

The Healer's Touch

The Healer’s Touch by Lori Copeland is by far the most unusual novel I have read in the last year. In fact, if you are tired of the same sort of love story, this may just be the book for you. What was most interesting to me about this title is the unique tie to the local folklore of the Ozarks. This book is an example of why it is so important to read the introduction to a book before you read the book! Had I just plowed into chapter one, I would have wondered what in the world the author was thinking!

In this story, Lyric Bolton drags in the scoundrel who busted up her barn into her home so that he might die comfortably. Hopeful to collect the bounty he might have on his head, she waits out his death….only he doesn’t die. The outlaw who is actually a U.S. Marshal with amnesia was a victim of the local “spook light” that no one can explain. Lyric nurses the stranger back to health all the while building an unexpected relationship with him.

I was very interested to hear Lori Copeland describe the tale of the strange light that lives in the woods of Missouri. It definitely helped me stay interested in the novel, even though I usually don’t have an appreciation for scary stories. While this wasn’t my favorite read this summer, I can appreciate the way Copeland tells a story. She is a talented story writer who I would read again.

This book is available for purchase August 2014.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Appalachian fiction, Appalachian Serenade, Miracle In a Dry Season, Sarah Loudin Thomas, West Virginia, Wise

apo serandeAuthor Sarah Loudin Thomas is a new author Bethany House Publishers is introducing this August with her debut novel, Miracle in a Dry Season. Appalachian Serenade is a Novella that is the prequel to the debut novel.

I adored the sweet story in Appalachian Serenade where we meet Delilah who has lost her husband and returned home to Wise, West Virginia.  There she is welcomed by her sister, a grumpy brother-in-law, and her niece Perla. To contribute to the family’s finances she obtains a job at the local store where she finds more than just a paycheck. She finds the life and the love she has been missing.

I really loved this Novella because of the way Thomas was able to build a believable relationship between two people despite the short length of the book. This is always the struggle I have reading a Novella, but Thomas has mastered it! This is a book I would definitely recommend to a friend. If the beautiful cover does not draw you in, the story will.

This book is currently available for free on Amazon as an Ebook for your Kindle. If you don’t have a Kindle, you can download the app to most devices. The Novella also includes an excerpt from Miracle in a Dry Season! I am excited to read it in its entirety! Enjoy!

Book Review, BookLookBloggers, Debra Clopton, Four Weddings and a Kiss, Margaret Brownley, Mary Connealy, Robin Lee Hatcher, Thomas Neslson

Four Weddings and a KissFour Weddings and a Kiss is a great way to sample four authors, three of which I had never read before. It is composed of four Novellas, written by Margaret Brownley, Debra Clopton, Mary Connealy, and Robin Lee Hatcher. Overall I enjoyed this book, but I would not count it as a favorite. It is a book I will pass on to friend as a fun, instant gratification kind of read.

In my mind, each author was given a directive to write a historical fiction piece with an independent heroine. The stories all take place in the west and while each one is unique and different, all four are quick romances involving strong female characters. Given the stories are Novellas and not Novels, I suppose a bit of rushing to “I love you” is expected. Of the four stories, A Love Letter to the Editor, by Robin Lee Hatcher, was my favorite. Her characters are believable and not as flamboyant as those featured in the other three books

If you enjoy books that are quick to get to the point and offer instant gratification, Four Weddings and a Kiss is a great choice for you. It is ideal for long trips in the car or a vacation type read. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by BookLookBloggers and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I have not been compensated.

Bethany House, Full Steam Ahead, historical fiction, Karen Witemeyer, Summer Reading

Full Steam AheadJust in time for summer, Full Steam Ahead is the perfect mixture of romance, adventure, and loveliness to add to the top of your MUST READ list. I enjoyed this book from Karen Witemeyer so much that I easily read it in one day! I only wish I had taken the time to savor it!

In Full Steam Ahead, Nicole Renard is on a mission to save her family’s business and legacy. She sets out to find not only the love of her life, but also an heir to take over her father’s shipping company. When her plans are deterred by those that mean her and her family harm, she stumbles upon Darius Thornton who is on his own mission, but his is one of self-imposed penance. The unlikely pair rescue each other in this fun and thrilling story.

Karen Witemeyer does an excellent job building relationships. I have never been disappointed with one of her books. The dialogue and feelings shared between the characters is interesting and believable. Full Steam Ahead is definitely one of those books you wish someone would make into a movie. Because I devoured this book like a piece of chocolate cake, I will read it again!

I was given a copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

I also highly recommend these other titles by Karen Witemeyer!

The Bridge Tender by Marybeth Whalen and Miracle Chocolate Chip Muffins

Chocolate Chip Muffins, Marybeth Whalen, Miracle Chocolate Chip Muffins, Recipe, SheReads, The Bridge Tender, The Bridge Tender Review

The Bridge TenderThe Bridge Tender by Marybeth Whalen is an unexpected journey through grief and recovery. This is not the typical romance novel where you meet the widow a year after her husband’s death and she quickly meets and falls in love with a man she hardly knows. In fact, this book is more about a woman who faces a devastating loss and slowly moves through recovery. It is heavy and emotional and I would not take it on vacation.

In this book, we are introduced to Emily Shaw who has married an amazing man named Ryan. After being married a few years shy of a decade, Emily loses Ryan to illness. He left her enough money to buy their dream home on the island of their honeymoon destination, Sunset Beach. It is there she meets new people she grows to love, including a man who understands loss.

Marybeth Whalen has a way with words. This story is unlike anything I have ever read. It is so different from many books that address the same issue of loss and loving again. The grief Emily Shaw feels in this book is tangible. It felt real and I actually cried a few real tears! I loved this book for that reason.  While it does end happily, the hope and relief come slowly. There is no instant gratification here. I would still give this book four stars, but I do not recommend this book for a fun and flirty vacation read. Seriously, you will need tissues…and a muffin.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from its publisher and BookLookBloggers in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

Speaking of a muffin, Marybeth Whalen also included recipes from the story in the back of the book! Here are the “Miracle Chocolate Chip Muffins.” After reading The Bridge Tender, I absolutely needed a muffin!

You really only need basic pantry ingredients.

Muffin Ingredients2 Large Eggs

2 Cups Sour Cream

1 Cup Milk

3 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour

4 Tbsp Sugar

2 tsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Salt

2 Cups Chocolate Chips

In a bowl, beat the 2 eggs. Next, stir in sour cream and milk. Mix dry ingredients together and then combine with the wet ingredients. Stir until moistened. Fold in Chocolate Chips. Fill greased muffin tin cups 3/4 full. Marybeth Whalen’s instructions say to bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes.

Muffin BatterI did so the first time and burnt mine. I think my oven is hotter! The second batch I baked at 375 for 20 minutes and they were perfect.

MuffinsBecause I am an emotional eater, I strongly suggest baking these before you read. If you are like me, you will need them!

Book Review: The Heart’s Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher

Robin Lee Hatcher, The Heart's Pursuit

The Heart's PursuitI love to read Historical Fiction like this new title from Robin Lee Hatcher. When I select books to review, I always choose according to what I already know I love. I know myself well, because I easily read The Heart’s Pursuit in a day. It is an enjoyable read and is very entertaining.

Robin Lee Hatcher tells the story of Silver Matlock who is left waiting at the altar. Blinded by her desire to marry, she missed the truth before her eyes. The groom not only broke her heart, but also made off with her family’s money. In desperation, she seeks out the help of a bounty hunter, Jared Newman. Jared works as a bounty hunter, but his true mission is to find and kill the man who murdered his family. The pair set off across the west on their own agendas, but find something unexpected in each other.

What I loved about this title is the strength Hatcher has written in Silver. She is a lady, but she is also strong and holds her own. Silver never backs down and remains determined. What I disliked about this book is the silence between the characters. Jared barely speaks on their trail ride and I wanted more from him. There is a stated reason for his silence, but I love to watch a romance grow.

Overall, this book is a four star Romance. If you love historical fiction, with action, adventure, love and a handsome hero this book is for you! I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

Lorna Seilstad, Revell Publishing, When Love Calls, While Love Stirs

While love stirsWhile Love Stirs written by Lorna Seilstad is Book #2 in her Gregory Sisters Series. It is a delightful read that I would give a two cups of coffee rating! That is, I will need to two cups of coffee today because I stayed up way past bed time to finish it! Lorna Seilstad does a great job of writing a series involving the same characters and allowing each book to stand alone. Seilstad does allude to details from Book #1, When Love Calls, but in no way did I feel like I was lost not having read it.

In this new title, Charlotte Gregory is looking to secure a position after graduating from Fannie Farmer’s School of Cookery. She is an excellent cook, but in 1910 women were not welcome in professional chefs kitchens. Charlotte is passionate and intelligent which always makes for a likeable heroine. In the midst of trying to pave the way for herself, she meets not one but two possible suitors. Dr. Brooks, the attractive but controlling physician, and Lewis the young talented vocalist.

While Love Stirs is the second book of Seilstad’s I have had the pleasure of reading. I also enjoyed Making Waves which released several years ago. If you enjoy lighthearted romantic historical fiction, this book is for you. It would definitely make for a great vacation read as it does not have an overcomplicated plot.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.
