Best Travel Book for Israel, Book Review, Books on Israel, Kathie Lee Gifford, The Rock The Road and the Rabbi

The Road The Rock and The Rabbai

A few years ago I had the privilege to travel to Israel and tour with a group of pastors.  I was really in awe of everything I saw, and our tour guide did an amazing job of connecting the Bible to each site we visited. However, now that I have read the Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi,  I want to go back! There is so much I missed! Kathie Lee Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel do an amazing job telling the story of the Holy Land,  and communicating the significance of related scripture.

I imagine the travel itinerary for trips to Israel is similar regardless of the tour company you choose. This book covers it all including Mount Carmel, Capernaum, The Sea of Galilee, Bethlehem, The Mount of Olives, The Upper Room, The Garden of Gethsemane, and Jerusalem.  I was given a book on my tour to help me better understand all that I was going to see.  Where it was information, this book is insight! Even if you never get to go to Israel, this book will allow you to connect scripture with geography.  I absolutely loved it!  If you have a list of books you are wanting to read this year, move the Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi to the top of your list!

I requested a copy of this book from BookLookBloggers. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own and I have not been compensated.

10th edition, Jane and Michael Stern, Road Food, Where to eat on the road

image1-2

My husband and I are attempting to travel all fifty states with our two boys before they graduate from high school. As they are still young, we have plenty of time, but so far we have made impressive progress! We live on the East Coast and have driven to California and back on a crazy six-week National Park Extravaganza! Oh how I wish I had this book on that trip!! Road Food is an incredible resource for finding the local favorites all across the States. This fall we are taking a two-week New England trip and I am so excited to try some of the hidden gems in this 10th edition of Road Food.

FullSizeRender-10

In September, we will be traveling to Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts in a two-week sprint to experience New England. I am excited to discover all of the great eateries listed in this book!  Road Food  is divided up regionally which is incredibly helpful. Most of the places listed are in towns that you might pass through while traveling on interstates. The listings include well visited towns and cities. For instance, I am from Knoxville, but most of the restaurants listed in Tennessee are in Nashville, Memphis, and Chattanooga. The establishment listed for Knoxville is Litton’s, which is a fantastic hamburger joint. It truly is a fantastic place to eat! I used their listing of Litton’s as a barometer of what the author’s recommendations might look like.

Currently, we live in Virginia and I also approve of the listings for our local area. Goolrick’s Pharmacy in Fredericksburg is a really neat place to grab a milkshake at the counter of an old-fashioned pharmacy you will likely not find anywhere else. Also listed is the Barbeque Exchange in Gordonsville where I have personally eaten numerous times. The parking lot is almost always full, but the line is worth it. They make their own pickles and even have a fun selection of homestyle desserts.

I am so excited to get on the road and start our New England adventure. Road Food will stay in the car so we always know where to eat! This truly is an incredible resource! I love it! I was given a complimentary copy of this book by BloogingforBooks. I was not required to give it a positive review. All opinions are my own and I have not been compensated.

We Stood Upon Stars

Two summers ago, my family of four set out on an adventure of a lifetime. We drove from Virginia to California and back on a mission to see as much of America’s preserved wilderness as possible. All together we visited 14 National Parks in a mere six weeks! It was an incredible trip that made us thirsty for more. Since then, we have found our way to two or there more National Parks on the East Coast. However, nothing quite gives you the goose bumps like Yosemite, Yellowstone, or Arches and Zion.  Because of our trip, I felt a kinship with Roger W. Thompson, author of We Stood Upon Stars.  I knew I had to read this book, for no other reason but to feel like I had a friend who has the fever for adventure.

We Stood Upon Stars is a collection of essays about Thompson’s mostly west coast adventures. He writes about many of the places I have traveled in a light but meaningful way. I love his conversational style and random musings. I also love that he includes illustrations with tips and recommendations for those who might venture out. Once you have seen a giant Sequoia or walked through Yosemite Valley…you know the next thing you must do is go back and do it again.

BIG TREE

Thompson’s description of the Badlands is just how I remember them:  untamable, broken, and beautiful. While words could never describe Yosemite…Thompson does a much better job than I could ever do.  He says it feels like a fantasy…and it absolutely does. I feel like this book is for anyone who has experienced the amazingness that is the landscape of the United States…or for the person who has never seen any of it.  I loved reading it. If We Stood Upon Stars doesn’t make you want to get out and have an adventure, nothing will.  I received a complimentary copy of this book by Blogging for Books. I was not required to give it a positive review. All opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Alongside his wife, he travels, surfs, snowboards, and fly-fishes—and is teaching his two young sons to do the same.

In one month and twenty-four days my family and I are heading out in a fifth wheel for six weeks to see 10 national parks. In the past we have always been tent people. Tent camping is cheap, and can be so much fun. Knowing we would be on the road for 42 days, we decided to upgrade our accommodations.

IMG_0029_2

We are pretty much newbies at the fifth wheel life and I can tell you from our limited experience…its a little complicated. There is more to buy than just the camper. You also need a fifth wheel hitch, a brake controller, and according to my husband…a second air conditioner and Ride Rite air bags. Also, if you live in Virginia, you have a wheel tax of sorts for your camper. Glamping is not cheap.

We made our practice run on our spring break, traveling 340 miles or so to Bay’s Mountain located in Kingsport, Tennessee. So much was learned on this first trip. In case you are new at this too…or just need a good laugh…here are just a few things we learned.

1. Even if you are too tired to find the hand towels and put out the toilet paper when you arrive, do it anyway. Your son might be first up in the morning and decide to use paper towels for his bathroom needs. Did I mention he flushed them?? In a camper potty??

2. Just because the gauge on your galley tank says its only 2/3 full, don’t bet on it. Water might back up and flow back out. Yes, that happened.

3. Hide a key that is accessible outside of your camper. And not in your car…it might be locked. After unlocking your camper, your son might turn the key back into the lock position without you knowing it. Yes, you can lock yourself out of your camper.

4. Subscribe to GoodSam. They take care of the locking yourself out of the camper ordeal..and quickly I might add. Even in far away places…like Bay’s Mountain. (I promise they did not pay me to say that…I am just really grateful!)

5. Lastly, if you add Mayo to your guacamole (I know it sounds weird…but it is so good) you will get food poisoning if you leave it out too long. And you will be glad you are in a camper and not in a tent. Food poisoning is not fun. Food poisoning without a toilet nearby is less fun.

Despite all of the “learning experiences,” we had so much fun!! The kids thought it was so cool to fuel up next to the big guys.

And spring was happening before our eyes.

IMG_0015_2

We made time for exploring.

And taking in the view.

I would love to hear about any of your RV “learning experiences!”  Please feel free to share in the comments. Happy camping!

This month my husband and I traveled to Israel with a group of Pastors for seven days of touring. To say that I was nervous would be a gross understatement. I was terrified. I knew for more than six months we would be traveling to Israel, and I did my very best to whine my way out of participating. I emailed news headlines to my husband almost daily and insisted we update our will! Having returned home all in one piece, I can honestly say that not once on my trip did I feel unsafe. Never again will I let my view of any place be subject to what I see on the evening news. Israel is amazing and a must see for anyone.

The picture above was taken on the Mount of Olives. This is the place from which Jesus ascended into heaven. Being on top provides a magnificent view of Jerusalem. It was a very windy and chilly morning, but of all of the days we toured, this was my favorite.

We walked to the foot of the Mount of Olives to The Garden of Gethsemane.

It is filled with beautiful Olive trees.

This is where Jesus would have prayed while the disciples slept the night before his crucifixion  Matthew 26:36-38

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

We spent a few days in Jerusalem and I really am surprised to say I would go again! I have traveled little (outside of the United States) beyond a cruise to Mexico. Jerusalem is fabulous in every way. When you enter the Damascus Gate, you are surrounded by a market place.

DSCN0455

We navigated the tunnel like hallways many times and loved every minute of it. There was delicious food, friendly shop owners ready to haggle, and history everywhere.

One of my favorite days came on a morning we had free to explore the city unguided. A group of us headed for the Southern Stairs and happened upon a string of Bar Mitzvah celebrations.

DSCN0659

The music, laughter, and singing was inspiring! I could have watched all day. Everyday we spent in Israel was incredible. We saw so much, and honestly I wish I had written more down. But I was too busy watching, observing, and attempting to savor every moment.

We stayed on the Sea of Galilee for two days. The views were breathtaking.

DSCN0063

We climbed to the top of Mount Arbel and were taken aback by the view from the mountain, but also the view of Jesus’ Galilean Ministry.

There is so much to see and experience in Israel, I could never do it justice. So I can only recommend that you go! Not only will you see the Holy Land, but the Bible will come alive in front of you and change the way you read it.

Beyond the serious nature of our trip, we had quite a bit of fun. We saw things we would never see here in the States…

DSCN0423

And I reached way out of my comfort zone. I floated in the Dead Sea, and then coated myself in the mud.

DSCN0328

With a promise to remove five years of age, who wouldn’t? This was the most disgusting I have ever felt. But it was fun!

Other notable stops on our trip included The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem. The Israel Museum offers a rare opportunity to view not only copies of the Dead Sea Scrolls, but also the actual scrolls. The scrolls are old and fragile, kept in the dark, but still viewable. My favorite part of this museum is the model of Jerusalem.

DSCN0814

It is fascinating to see the city up close as it would have been in the Second Temple Period.

DSCN0796

My only regret regarding the museums was that we didn’t have enough time in them. I could have spent an entire day in the Holocaust museum. There was so much to read and see. It was crowded at the time we visited and I was a little rushed getting through it.

DSCN0627

This is a picture of the exterior. My favorite sculpture was Janusz and the Children.

DSCN0624

Janusz and the Children beautifully tells the story of Janusz Korczak and the orphans in his care. It is said he was given many opportunities to escape the fate that would await him at the Treblinka extermination camp. However, he refused to abandon the children from his orphanage. There is said to have been as many as 196 orphans in his care.

My trip to Israel will no doubt be the most memorable trip I will experience in my lifetime. It was an unbelievable opportunity and I honestly believe everyone should go and see it for themselves. We traveled with New Spring Church through Faith Based Expeditions. I highly recommend Faith Based Expeditions should you choose to travel to Israel. It was a very organized and well planned trip. Shalom!
